This can be both a fun and important aspect of song writing so to explain.  I read an interesting point that suggested you examine songs you like, and why they work. How do the instruments/melodies support the words? Does it help the mood you’re trying to express/what you’re trying to say with the song?

Thinking outside the both involves embracing creativity, exploring unconventional approaches, and breaking away from traditional norms such as song structure, using different instruments and playing with different lyrical structures. Don’t get too wound up in the song examples which generally are chosen to explain an unusual approach to a new song idea.
