  • The process of song writing can vary greatly among different artists, and there’s no strict rule about whether the melody or lyrics should come first. Some songwriters start with a melody, while others begin with lyrics. Others may develop both simultaneously.

  • The song structure of a song works through the song’s elements which includes the verse, choruses and often a bridge. Whilst the verse and chorus are somewhat obvious the bridge can act as a break from the repetition of the other sections and add either a new musical element or build tension or a different perspective.

  • An easy question to ask but a minefield of answers. Certainly! Song writing is a creative and personal process, and these questions can help guide and inspire you during a workshop. Feel free to adapt them based on the specific goals and themes of your new song ideas.

  • Recording your voice and creating a demo can be a rewarding experience which then allows you to showcase your new song ideas with others. Important techniques are to consider voice warm up, microphone etc all covered in more detail in module 14.

    Whilst the choice between guitar and piano depends on your personal preferences and your basic skill level, both piano and guitar are versatile instruments that can be used effectively in song writing they both have different strengths and characteristics. The piano can be considered one of the best instruments for song writing, especially if you also sing, as it makes it easier to sing along while playing with different harmonization’s.

  • For song writing the recording process raises a number of issues and the subject of a suitable workstation (DAW) particularly for a home studio is important especially within a sensible budget for the beginner. This is covered in more detail in module 14 – setting up a home studio.

Like a number of maybe non-related skills there is still a discipline and ground rules to consider and follow. Many famous and successful songwriters talk about what works for them and how they overcome what can quickly become a frustrating task to archive that ‘special’ song.

  • The importance of Copyright is a legal concept that grants the creator of an original work exclusive rights to it’s use and distribution, usually for a limited time. Any potential collaboration is important to have protection, in place. This is particularly important when looking at a possible collaboration partnership.

  • Contacting a record company or music publisher with a new song requires a strategic approach to make a positive impression, the music business is competitive, and persistence combined with professionalism is key. While there are no guarantees, presenting yourself and your music in a polished and thoughtful manner increases your chances of making a positive approach.

  • The music business covers a wide range of roles and responsibilities and making contact is vital to fully understand these specific roles which may depend on the size of the company. The music industry is a complex and multifaceted field, and it involves a variety of professionals who play different roles in the creation.promotion,and distribution,and management of music.

  • If your game plan is to send your song to a music publisher then make sure you have followed the advice on how to follow the rules re copyright, ensuring your recording is a high standard and your critique of your song is both honest and thorough.

  • This module covers the pros and cons of setting up your own home studio and a general idea of the equipment you will need.. It also covers an overview of the various software packages that are available to buy.

  • Thinking outside the both involves embracing creativity, exploring unconventional approaches, and breaking away from traditional norms such as song structure, using different instruments and playing with different lyrical structures.

  • Here there is some important advice regarding collaborating with other potential song writing partners for your new song or even part songs. Some maybe complete whilst others may have just a verse or chorus or whatever.
